PROJECTS
Comon Invent has commissioned and is currently
operating eNose projects worldwide.
A selection of projects:
Fujairah Municipality
United Arab Emirates
We are glad to announce our contribution to sustainable port development in Fujairah, the United Arab Emirates.
The online eNose monitoring network to cover the whole Oil Industrial Zone of the Port of Fujairah is operational since 2019. H.E. Mohamed Saif Al Afkham and the Mayor of the city of Rotterdam H.E. Ahmed Aboutaleb inaugurated the control room of the Health Department of the Fujairah Municipality where the eNose information is displayed real-time on a video wall to enhance air quality awareness. The eNose network assists operators in the control room to pin-point possible emission sources leading to odour disturbance and take appropriate action.
With 86 eNose locations, the network will cover the complete industrial area and some adjacent residential areas.
TAL Transalpine Pipeline Trieste
Italy
TAL Trieste commissioned a network of 12 eNoses surrounding the tank farm San Dorligo in Trieste. The eNose network will continuously monitor changes in air composition in and around the tank farm vicinity. The eNose network provides TAL with additional information about the rise and spread of emissions and can be used as a tool for pro-active odour emission management.
Tank farm San Dorligo della Valle is connected to the SIOT Marine Terminal which is located in the Bay of Muggia in the Gulf of Trieste. SIOT Marine Terminal is the starting point of the TAL (TransAlpine Pipeline) system: averaging 41 million tons of crude oil unloaded annually, TAL accounts for 70% of the traffic in the Port of Trieste. This makes it the busiest oil terminal in Italy and the second busiest in the Mediterranean area.
Industrial Park Freeport
Grand Bahamas
The eNose network provides 24/7 realtime information about changes in air quality in the Freeport Industrial Park. The information that is derived from the eNose network can help determine, if any, the effects of exposure to hazardous chemicals to the environment and health of individuals in the residential communities and surrounding areas. The eNose network offers a powerful tool that provides pro-active odor, health and safety control for the responsible authorities, including the Bahamas Government in partnership with the Department of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) and the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) Environmental Department.
Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd.
United Arab Emirates
Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd. commissioned an eNose network on its terminal premises. Twelve electronic noses powered by solar panels are installed on strategic locations on the site. The eNose network will help Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd. to continuously monitor the rise and spread of gas emissions that could evaporate from the terminal, but also emissions that originate from sources outside the terminal boundaries and disperse over the terminal. The eNose network will provide Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd. with an additional operational tool and serve as an early warning system for SHEQ management on the terminal. This is in line with the Safety, Health and Environmental Quality objectives that Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd. is committed to for its own employees, customers and visitors and also for its neighbouring communities.
We-nose project, Port of Rotterdam
Netherlands
This eNose network of around 250 eNoses is a project supported by several stakeholders in the port of Rotterdam. The projects aim is to provide detailed, real-time insight into the air quality in and around the port mainly focused on the petrochemical industry. This is an important step forward to improve living conditions, transparency and the relationship with the environment. eNoses in the port of Rotterdam serve as a management information tool for a more pro-active odour control and environmental management.

Muuga Harbour, Port of Tallinn
Estonia
Over twenty eNoses are installed in the Muuga Port and Maardu region in Tallinn, Estonia. The innovative eNoses are continuously monitoring the chemical composition in ambient air. The eNoses are installed at various locations around terminals, industry and residential area to monitor both odorous and non-odorous gas emissions.
The Muuga port area is characterized by operations of industrial companies whose activities could lead to odors in the surrounding area. It is often difficult to identify what and where the smells originate. Enoses help the operating terminals as well as the authorities to obtain a clearer picture of the odour situation in and around the port area. Together all stakeholders strive towards preventing odour nuisance as much as possible. The eNose network in the Muuga area is a valuable tool in reaching this goal.
This eNose project in the Muuga area is a cooperation by the Environmental Research Centre, Environment Agency, Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Inspectorate, the Port of Tallinn and Muuga port operating terminals – Vopak E.O.S., Vesta Terminal Tallinn OU and Oiltanking Tallinn AS.
GeurinZicht, Port of Amsterdam
Netherlands
Comon Invent has installed 3 dozen eNoses in the Port of Amsterdam around the North Sea-canal, nearby oil terminals and other businesses that could possibly emit odours that lead to nuisance. This odour monitoring network is part of the project “GeurinZicht”. This project is an initiative by the Port of Amsterdam in cooperation with EPA North Sea Canal Area and the Province of North-Holland. These parties work together in this project with private companies and the Fire Department. The project aims to improve the quality of life in and around the port area.
The EPA and companies in the project all have access to the online dashboard that presents the data which is registered by the eNose network. The eNose network allows all parties to take proper action in case an unusual air composition that is detected by the eNoses. With help of the eNose data the EPA and nearby companies investigate the possible source of the unusual air composition.
A number of private companies in the Port of Amsterdam apply the eNose technology on their own premises to monitor their own operations. This allows them to immediately intervene during accidental odorous and non-odorous emissions that could possibly lead to odour nuisance or gas related safety risks.
The eNose project in the Port of Amsterdam contributes to the sustainability of the port and helps localize sources of odour nuisance.
Port of Sohar
Oman
The Port of Sohar is one of the worlds largest port developments. Air quality monitoring with eNoses is a contributing factor in the process of sustainable industrial port development.
Port of Durban
South Africa
In the Port of Durban, industry and residential areas are highly clustered and environmental restrictions are becoming more stringent. Optimal living and working conditions have to be ensured. eNoses in the port area have the ability to monitor changes in the concentration of trace gasses in the ambient air that exceed the background noise. This can lead, i.e., to a faster, more accurate and more efficient way of incident control.
International Airport Amsterdam Schiphol
Netherlands
This International Airport delivers fuel to most visiting Aircrafts. An extensive underground fuelling network is available. An eNose network of around 30 eNoses is monitoring fuel spillage, leakage and fluid-levels in important hubs in this fuelling network. All eNose systems are powered by integrated solar panels and batteries.
Nuclear Security Summit (NSS)
Netherlands
During the Nuclear Security Summit 2014 in The Hague the air quality was monitored with a network of 65 eNoses. Both stationary and mobile eNoses were used in this project. Stationary eNoses, installed in the residential area, on the inlets of air-conditioning installations at relevant buildings in the NSS vicinity and 2 mobile eNoses placed on vehicles continuously researching the area, allowed for a 24/7 up-to-date picture of the air quality situation.

Integration of eNose technology with spirometry, Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam (AMC)
Netherlands
This newly developed integration of eNose technology with spirometry provides repeatable exhaled breath analysis, adequately distinguishing patients with asthma, COPD, lung cancer and healthy controls.
